Uncompressed Audio
Uncompressed audio are real sound waves that have been captured and converted into a digital format without any further processing. Since there is no further processing, this is the best quality audio file type. This type of quality comes at a price though, as these files are very large and take up a lot of space.
File Types
The three most common types of uncompressed audio files are: PCM, WAV, and AIFF. PCM stands for pulse-code modulation and is the most common type of audio used in both CDs and DVDs. WAV, or waveform audio file format, files are typically used with uncompressed audio but are sometimes used with compressed audio as well. The WAV file format is just a wrapper for the PCM file. It's main purpose is to make PCM more suitable for use on Windows systems. AIFF stands for audio interchange file format and was developed by Apple. Apple developed this file type going off of the WAV file format. It's main purpose is to make PCM more suitable for use on Mac systems.
