Lossy Compression Audio
This is one of the two types of compressed audio formats (see lossless compression). There is a slight loss of data during the compression process. However, compression is an important process as it saves a lot of space on the disk. Lossy compression means sacrificing some of your sound quality for smaller file sizes.
File Types
The most popular audio file type is a lossy compression, the MP3 file. The MP3 file satisfies a three-fold goal: drop all sound data beyond that of the hearing range of normal people, reduce the quality of sounds that are more difficult to hear, and compress as efficiently as possible. This is why it has become the most popular audio file type for music. Nearly every digital device that has audio playback these days supports MP3 files. AAC, or advanced audio coding, is another type of lossy compression audio file. This file type is more advanced and technological than the MP3 file, and therefore has better audio quality. This is why it is the most commonly used compression file for Youtube, Android, IOS, and even Playstation. The OGG Vorbis file type does not stand for anything, because OGG is simply a multimedia container that has the ability to hold all different kinds of compression files. It most commonly holds OGG Vorbis files. This file type became popular because it is: open-source software and preforms significantly better than the other lossy compression file types. However, many devices do not natively support this format because of the popularity of MP3 and AAC. The WMA file, or windows media audio, is very similar to AAC and OGG. The goal with this file type was to better the original MP3 file. There is no real benefit for this file over AAC or OGG.
